AP Portfolio Guidelines

AP 2-D Studio Art

Basic Requirements

  • Digital Portfolio Submitted beginning of May
  • 24-29 Pieces of work total
  • 3 part portfolio
    • Breadth
    • Depth/Concentration
    • Quality
  • Finished 12-15 pieces a semester
  • Participate in Anomoly, Odyssey, Single Artist Showcase.
  • Final Portfolio is your AP Portfolio
"Students are asked to demonstrate mastery of 2-D design through any two-dimensional medium or process, including, but  limited to, graphic design, digital imaging, photography, collage, fabric design, weaving, fashion design, fashion illustration, painting and printmaking.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Breadth (12 pcs)

The students work in this section should demonstrate understanding of the principals of design. Successful works of art require the integration of the elements and principals of design. Students must therefore be actively engaged with these concepts while thoughtfully composing their art.

The work in this section should show evidence of conceptual, perceptual, and expressive development, as well as technical skill.

Principles of Design (Breadth)
Unity/Variety
Emphasis
Rhythm
Proportion/Scale
Balance
Contrast
Repetition
Figure/ground relationships

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Concentration (12 pcs)

A concentration is a body of related works that demonstrate a students commitment to the thoughtful investigation of a specific visual idea.

*The concentration should grow out of the students idea and demonstrate growth and/or discovery through a number of conceptually related works.

Section III: Breadth
rationale
The student’s work in this section should demonstrate understanding of the
principles of design, including unity/variety, balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm,
repetition, proportion/scale and occupied/unoccupied space . The work should show
evidence of conceptual, perceptual, and expressive development, as well as technical
skill . The student should be introduced to problems in concept, form and materials as
they pertain to three-dimensional design .
requirements

  • The best demonstrations of breadth clearly show experimentation and a range of approaches to the work .

a range of conceptual approaches and physical means of creating art . It is possible to
do this in a single medium or in a variety of media . When a student chooses to use a
single medium — for example, if a Breadth section consists entirely of ceramics —
the work must show a variety of applications of design principles .
Examples:
• Work that employs line, plane, mass, volume or motion to activate form in space
• Work that suggests rhythm through modular structure
• Work that uses light or shadow to determine form, with particular attention to
surface and interior space
• Work that demonstrates an understanding of symmetry and asymmetry
• Assemblage or constructed work that transforms materials or object identity
through the manipulation of proportion/scale
• Work in which the color and texture unify or balance the overall form of the piece
• Work that explores the transition from organic to mechanical form
